CSE 307 Course Software

You will need the following software for this course:

• Standard ML of New Jersey.
  You will need version 110.54 or newer for the homeworks. You can download it (for Windows, Mac OS X 10.5, Linux and Unix systems) via the above link, or you can use the version installed as /usr/local/bin/sml on the UG Lab systems.

  The following documents will help you learn Standard ML and the SML/NJ system:

  • Introduction to Standard ML, by Robert Harper.
    NOTE: This is fairly old, and as a consequence there are some minor discrepancies between the language it describes and what is implemented in the current SML/NJ system. However, I still like this tutorial better than Harper's more recent Programming in Standard ML (online version).

  • Using the SML/NJ System, by Peter Lee.

  • A list of error messages produced by the SML/NJ compiler, with explanations.

Here is my recommendation for additional software you can use so as to work with SML in an efficient manner under most systems:

• Get Eclipse, if you don't have it already.

• Get the MLDev plugin for Eclipse. Installation is accomplished by unzipping this file into your Eclipse installation folder. See here for documentation on how to use MLDev. You will need to point it at the SML/NJ executable you have installed in order to run SML programs.

• Use Firefox instead of Internet Exploder. This doesn't have anything to do with SML -- it's just my best advice.

The above should get you started. A step-by-step explanation what to do with these tools would require many more words than I can afford to write. I use this stuff myself, and I will be using it in class demonstrations. If you see me do something in class that you don't know how to do, ask me and I will tell you.
