Logging in to the UG Lab Systems

From a Workstation in Room 2128

To log in to one of the UG Lab workstations in Room 2128, first select a workstation and sit down. If the screen appears blank, but there is a orange LED glowing at the lower right of the monitor, press any key on the console and wait a few seconds. The screen should unblank, hopefully revealing a prompt like the following:
FreeBSD (bfs2) (ttyv0) login:
At the login: prompt, type the username you were given by the account request screen when you requested an account. The system will then print:
Password:
Type the password you selected when you requested your account. It will not echo. You should see something like the following:
Copyright (c) 1980, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 The Regents of the University of California. All rights reserved.
followed by a signon message (read it!), and finally
%
At this point you are logged in, and are talking to the Unix shell.

Remember to log out before you leave. Type the logout command to the shell prompt to do this.

From the Internet

You can log in to the UG Lab systems from elsewhere on the Internet. Use ``telnet'' or other suitable command available on the remote system to contact ug.cs.sunysb.edu. Or, just click here. You will arrive at a host that is recommended for remote login. This host is in a secure area where it is not likely to be reset suddenly by a random passer-by. If you log in to other workstations, you run the risk that an antisocial user at the console will press the reset button or turn off the power without checking to see if anybody else is logged in.

Once you have made a connection to the Lab, you should see a login: prompt, at which point you proceed to log in as described above.

Via Dialup

You can also dial up the campus modem pool and access the Lab that way. For information on how to dial the campus modem pool, please try Information Technology or Instructional Computing.
